Appalachia mountains' destruction cited by environmentalists
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Environmentalists are using Valentine's Day to propose a breakup -- in America's marriage to coal.
Power Past Coal says protests against coal-fired power plants and mountaintop removal mining will be held from Arizona to New York to Kentucky.
It says people are ready to turn to renewable energy and stop the destructive Appalachian form of strip mining.
Ted Glick, of Chesapeake Climate Action Network, says the transition won't be easy but must begin.
In Arizona, participants will ask the U.S. Secretary of the Interior to reverse a mining permit near Flagstaff.
New York City Loves Mountains will ask people to switch to clean energy.
And Kentuckians for the Commonwealth will be out supporting the Stream Saver, legislation to ban valley fills.
